In a heartwarming celebration of community spirit and dedication, Tamahere local Jane Manson, Tauwhare local Lockie Verner and Matangi's Ian Wallace were honoured at the Waikato District's Mayoral Community Awards, held on October 3, 2024. The event, which took place in the council chambers, was a diverse gathering of family, friends, and supporters who came to recognise the unwavering commitment of these local stalwarts.
Jane Manson, known for her extensive work with the Tamahere St Stephens Church and her involvement in local heritage projects, has been a pivotal figure in fostering community engagement and preserving local history. Her efforts, especially around the Tamahere Markets, have not only enriched the community's cultural fabric but have also enhanced communal spaces, making them more inviting and functional for residents and visitors alike.

Lockie Verner, member of the Tauwhare Hall Committee has made significant contributions through his volunteer construction work. Nominated for his dedication and service, Lockie's efforts reflect a deep commitment to improving the lives of those around him, highlighting the impact of volunteerism on community well-being.

Ian Wallace is set to retire from his role as chairman of the Maatangi Hall this year, marking the end of an impressive 15-year tenure. Throughout his time, he not only chaired the hall committee but also contributed significantly as a former member of the Maatangi community committee. Ian remains actively involved with the Matangi Drainage Board, one of the district's last volunteer drainage boards. Under his leadership, the hall has been well-maintained, boasting a new roof and maintaining a steady stream of bookings.

The ceremony, led by Waikato District Mayor Jacqui Church, acknowledged these individuals among a group of 32 volunteers from the region, each of whom has contributed uniquely to the district's ethos of "Creating Liveable, Thriving, and Connected Communities." This year's awards focused on the essential role these volunteers play in enhancing the district's social and cultural landscape.
