Tamahere’s ChargeNet EV Charger Exceeds Expectations with Impressive Utilisation in First Six Months

The Tamahere Village ChargeNet EV charger, a community-led project launched six months ago, has surpassed projected usage expectations, solidifying its role as a vital community resource.

Over the past five months, the charger has averaged 392 sessions per month, translating to approximately 98 charges per week. This frequency indicates robust usage well beyond initial forecasts.

Feedback from the community highlights that the charger’s utilisation is increasing in line with expectations, with an average of 14 to 15 charging sessions per day. However, the current charging speed has emerged as a constraint. Although the charger is classified as a fast charger, ChargeNet originally intended to install an even faster station. Unfortunately, the local lines company could not support the necessary infrastructure for the higher-speed charger at the time of installation.

Looking ahead, ChargeNet anticipates the situation will improve within the next 24 months. The company plans to engage with the TCC and Waikato District Council to explore the possibility of upgrading the existing charger and potentially expanding the number of EV-friendly parking spaces at the site.

As usage continues to grow, the anticipated upgrades could further enhance the charger’s capacity and speed, aligning with the increasing demand from local and Waikato Expressway EV drivers.
